Our staff normally like to end the term with a Christmas Meal, a rare opportunity for our large team to get together. So in response to the lack of party, we decided to get our staff a gift, that has meant we could not only treat our staff but help our friends in the theatre industry too. - [Our 2020 Christmas Cards Designers!](https://www.arts1.co.uk/our-2020-christmas-cards-designers/): We had so many entries for our Christmas Card Competition this year - thank you so much to everyone who entered! I am very pleased to be able to announce the winners and I have posted their winning designs below - We couldn't stick to just three (one from each category) we have snuck a fourth one in! But honestly, there were so many great designs, it was so hard to only pick 4! - [Women in business – Rebecca Carrington](https://www.arts1.co.uk/women-in-business-rebecca-carrington/): "I thrive in a crisis. I believe when there is a problem, there is also a solution,"  she said.  Rebecca was on maternity leave with her then five month old, first born child when Covid struck. As the country teetered on the brink of a national lockdown, Rebecca’s fierce instinct to safeguard her 500-plus team of students and teachers led to the immediate temporary closure of Arts1 School of Performance, an independent theatre school.  “We had a responsibility not to take risks.  It was about protecting the quality and integrity of what we do and the security of our families. - [The Lockdown Masterclass Round Up](https://www.arts1.co.uk/the-lockdown-masterclass-round-up/): During lockdown, we managed to hit an astonishing 20 masterclasses, which included 23 guests. Hosted by our very own James Grimsey, we were joined by these incredible guests who chatted about their careers, their training and their biggest moments in the industry. We started with Olivier nominee LAURA PITT-PULFORD who trained at Mountview before taking on huge shows such as Side Show, Barnum and the Sound of music. CAMERON FLYNN joined us from Matt Bournes Red Shoes before LAUREN BYRNE from Six & The Voice joined us to chat about taking on such a well-known roll in one of the most popular current musicals. PAUL BULLION was number 4 who chatted all thinks Netflix and acting before West End Star ALICE FEARN gave us a run-down on playing huge roles like Elphaba and Beverley Bass. REECE WOODIER from BBC's Greatest Dancer joined us and gave students feedback on their performances in dance before CASSIDY JANSON joined us chatting about how not every start to a career is easy, but now with her Olivier Nomination showed us with hard work and determination you can do it. GRACE MOUAT from hit shows such as & Juliet and Six chatted to us about playing every single queen in the show! TOSH WAHNOGO-MAUD chatted to students about having the right attitude in this industry before he joined us as one of our judges at our online festival. OLIVIA MOORE who, so early in her career, has taken on West End Leading roles such as Jenna and Veronica Sayer topped the leader board in our weekly game of heads up! West Ends Leading Lady Julie Atherton chatted about her incredible career and an endless list of credits. LIA GIVEN talked to us about being a dance captain and her role covering the female tracks in Hamilton. Olivier Award Winner MICHAEL JIBSON joined us to chat about how he got his iconic role in Hamilton. Broadways ASMERET GHEBRIMICHAEL chatted to us about the BLM movement and her many incredible roles in theatre. We then had 4 guests at once, AISLING GAFFNEY, HANNAH LOCKE, NICK LODGE and ROSS JARDINE WIGHT, who all met when they worked backstage on Dreamgirls and gave us a 'behind the scenes' insight into how a show comes together. Sunny Afternoon and Mamma Mia cast member HARRIET BUNTON joined us next, before ASHLEE IRISH from Dreamgirls and Tina Turner the musical answered all our student's questions. Our third Elphaba JACQUELINE HUGHES chatted to us about playing the iconic roll around the world. AMY SHACKCLOTH gave us an amazing insight into being a musical director of the West End. Our final guest was RHIANE DRUMMOND who has come straight from covering the lead in 9to5 and Dreamgirls. Do you want the masterclass to make a return next year? We do! Keep your eyes peeled. A HUGE thank you to all of our guests who spent some of their lockdown time with us - giving us a little bit of an escape from the crazy times! - [DARE TO DANCE – Review By Nancy Stevens](https://www.arts1.co.uk/dare-to-dance-review-by-nancy-stevens/): The show opened in the 1920s with the students showing their progression through the different levels, from the little ones working through the grades and ultimately to advanced pointe work. The Charleston en pointe was impressive! It was wonderful to see a narrative interspersed with dancers sharing their stories and experiences.  Many describing how much practice is needed and that, ultimately the goal, is to be in the frontline. - [Twisted Tales – Review by Nancy Stevens](https://www.arts1.co.uk/twisted-tales-review-by-nancy-stevens/): The extraordinarily talented creative team at Arts1 presented Twisted Tales. The tales brought together classic children’s stories including Rumpelstiltskin, The Elves and the Shoemaker, The Little Match girl, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Brave Tin Soldier and Hansel and Gretel.  They took the plot points, twisted the themes, re-wrote the characters and changed the endings so nothing was predictable!  The whole production was theatrical from start to finish and even though each story was self-contained, there was a beginning, a middle and an end. - [Move it 2019 – The Show Must Go On](https://www.arts1.co.uk/move-it-2019-the-show-must-go-on/): The Arts1 showcase at Move It was simply sublime. The dancers – creepy clowns – were a vision in circus-inspired monochrome, with a striking colour-pop of red balloons which were popped to coincide with drumbeats. The theme, The Show Must Go Onby Queen, was appropriate in light of the magnificent portrayal of Freddie Mercury’s life in the recent biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody and demonstrated the limits to which dancers have to push themselves, almost to breaking point, to create perfection. This dark piece was brilliantly choreographed by Leanne Hughes, who always pushes the boundaries with her bold ideas. Clearly in a trance, lead dancer Benjy Stevens wore a genuine WWII gas mask, which was both shocking and disturbing, as he wrestled to remove it from his face. - [Move it 2019 – Competition](https://www.arts1.co.uk/move-it-2019-competition/): How to enter Visit our social media pages on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter for a chance to win the following prizes! I can’t mention every performer individually, however gave standout performances:- A 14 year old William Daw opened the show, with perfect diction and a face that would make angels weep, this boy has something special and he’d make a perfect Oliver! Danielle Casey, tumbling blonde curls, displays a phenomenal maturity in her acting at the tender age of just 14. She acts with style and substance. A 13 year old Daryl Mills’ performance moved me to tears as the young black teen being bullied on the bus and who dares to stand up to his perpetrator with devastating consequences. Both Adam Cam and Jack Nutall – wrestling with their sexuality, Jack, offering flowers and clearly more accepting of his feelings, and Adam, still in denial but clearly having feelings for Jack. On a personal note, I could relate to Ellis Restall’s portrayal of the “Girl with depression”, stuck in in her room and trying to cope with her Mum’s decision to choose, what was a clearly unsuitable boyfriend, over her. Therefore she misses out on life, feels rejected and her pain was evident. The angst of witnessing the two sisters waiting for a boy who they both know will not turn up. The younger sister showing wisdom beyond her years and the elder sister, in denial. Casey Smith is the alpha female with her devout girl followers, vulnerable underneath but angry that the boy she is keen on is with someone else and when her devotees “agree” with her when she wishes said boy, happiness, flies into a rage. Natascha Norton – chains herself to a bench, clearly angry at the world, protesting against everything, violence, war, tidal surges, politics and what she sees as the futility of it all. Her frustration very evident but also realising, deep down, that protesting, won’t achieve her goals. - [Interview – Luke Bayer](https://www.arts1.co.uk/interview-luke-bayer/): I did lots of amateur shows, concerts whilst I was training at Mountview and I spent three years at mountview on the musical degree course - [Meet The Team – Jake Maiden](https://www.arts1.co.uk/meet-the-team-jake-maiden/): Jake Maiden, teaches Commercial both on our Sixth Form and Part Time school. Every second Monday we will be releasing a new blog on our website. We are so excited for what we have lined up; interviews with our team, industry professionals, past and present students and we even have some top tips from some of our staff and industry mentors in their specialist field. - [Move It 2017](https://www.arts1.co.uk/move-it-2017/): Arts1 Creative director took to the Performing arts studio to lead two workshops – the first an introduction to Estill Voice training, followed by a voice Masterclass for dance and fitness professionals. We had students scouted for professional opportunities in Dance and Modelling and thanks to our students performances increased our standing with professional training institutions. Thank you for everyone involved, it was a massive team effort and you should all be incredibly proud. - [Milton Keynes Festival of Music](https://www.arts1.co.uk/milton-keynes-festival-of-music/): Well done singers for a brilliant weekends work! ? - [Perfect 6th Choir](https://www.arts1.co.uk/perfect-6th-choir/): The Group’s Musical Director is Arts1 course leader James Grimsey. “Perfect 6th are a choir of significant talent, their young vibe and incredible energy will blow you away. They have trained in technical voice, choral singing, Ballet, Jazz and Commercial styles and they put this together in impressive contemporary vocal performances” - [Arts1 Student hits the West-End in School of Rock](https://www.arts1.co.uk/arts1-student-hits-the-west-end-in-school-of-rock/): The student who attends classes at Arts1 successfully auditioned before Christmas along with hundreds of other hopefuls for the latest box office smash from Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. - [How to choose the right Dance and Musical Theatre school](https://www.arts1.co.uk/how-to-choose-the-right-dance-and-musical-theatre-school/): There are two main areas to focus on when looking at a school.  The school itself, it's staff team and processes and quality assurances in place as well as their track record and experience.  Secondly the actual classes that you want to enrol your child in at the school.  If I were you I would focus all your energy on the first item on the agenda - the school.  Focus on finding the people that are going to take care of your child and nurture them educationally and vocationally to achieve their full potential as a performer and human being.  There are several features that all quality schools will have in place - Qualified teachers, appropriate insurances, a track record of success, professional facilities, the list goes on... - [Arts1 student hits our screens at Christmas](https://www.arts1.co.uk/arts1-student-hits-our-screens-at-christmas/): “It was Ellis’s first major role and it was such an intense filming weekend that it was about 10.30pm on the Sunday night by the time we left. “In the advert Ellis receives some stunning shoes from her brother for Christmas and she absolutely adored them. “But we left so late that I forgot to ask if we could have them. So I’ve actually ordered her the same shoes from the advert for Christmas! “They are from Marks & Spencer and they are going to be a popular item this Christmas. She doesn’t know she’s getting them.” Now, being the ethical, dilligent journalists at Celebrate:MK that we are, we didn’t want to be the Christmas Scrooges who spoil the surprise for the youngster, so we asked Rebecca if we could print the story. “Of course,” she replied. “Ellis has already said to me, ‘Mum, I’d really like to get those shoes on Christmas day, wrapped exactly how they are in the advert. And she knows what I’m like!” - [Triple Bill of West-End Talent comes to MK](https://www.arts1.co.uk/triple-bill-of-west-end-talent-comes-to-mk/): The full time students at Arts1 spend intensive hours every week training their craft in all disciplines of performance: Ballet, Jazz, Commercial Dance, Voice, Acting, Solo Singing, Body conditioning, Choral Singing... the list goes on! But students at the school also have incredible opportunities to work with some of the UK's biggest names in theatre and performance. - [Which voice? The problems with the new LAMDA MT syllabus](https://www.arts1.co.uk/which-voice-the-problems-with-the-new-lamda-mt-syllabus/): Whist generally useful, I found one particular update deeply concerning. At a relatively low grade students are now being asked by LAMDA to explain the difference between "head voice" and "chest voice".  I understand that an assessment of knowledge of how the voice works is desirable, but the choice of language has troubling implications that reaches far beyond semantics. - [Maths for non mathematicians](https://www.arts1.co.uk/maths-for-non-mathematicians/): We are so pleased to announce our tutorial sessions to support our students in their GCSE Maths. For a long time we have worked with students struggling with this particular subject and although there are those obvious links to the creative world, for our actors, singers and dancers achieving the GCSE at C or above is a requirement for all Schools and Colleges. - [The Singing Dancer – Liz Hetherington](https://www.arts1.co.uk/the-singing-dancer-liz-hetherington/): A few years ago we were doing a production of 'Hello Dolly' at Bird College. When you looked in the front of the score it was like visiting another world. It called for a cast of - besides the principal parts - it called for 8 male dancers 8 female dancers but then it asked for 8 male singers and 8 female singers. Those were the days hey?  You could be a dancer or a singer or an actor and almost never the twain would meet. - [Arts1 – 10 years later…](https://www.arts1.co.uk/arts1-10-years-later/): A cast of 350 young people and adults from MK and beyond helped Milton Keynes based musical theatre school Arts 1 celebrate its 10th birthday with a spectacular gala show at The Venue at Walnut Tree at the weekend (April 30th/May 1st). With three shows on Saturday and Sunday, around 1000 people saw a performance that showcased the broad section of skills taught at Arts1, involving many of the children and full-time Sixth Form students as well as the adult choir and performers receiving one to one training, with cast ages ranging from 7 to 70+ years of age - [The Addams Family The Musical – Audition Workshops](https://www.arts1.co.uk/the-addams-family-the-musical-audition-workshops/): This year we are providing an exciting workshop for students aged 4 – 6 years old outside of the production so they get all of the excitement of the show in a more manageable schedule – further information will be announced shortly. You need to book in for the audition workshops if you are aged 7 - 21 and want to take part. - [Joseph Tour](https://www.arts1.co.uk/joseph-tour/): We are looking for a large number of children aged 6-13 years, who are able to learn the songs and musical staging for this wonderful show. You do not need to currently attend classes at Arts1 to take part in this production. - [Adrian Mole Trip – 31st March](https://www.arts1.co.uk/adrian-mole-trip-31st-march/): TRIP: Adrian Mole the Musical at the Leicester Curve - Tuesday 31st March 7pm: We have 20 tickets available to see this NEW MUSICAL with a fantastic score and charming storyline. Travel to Leicester isn't included but lift sharing might be available. Book here for children (£15) and adults (£28) https://arts1sop.wufoo.com/forms/adrian-mole-the-musical/ - [The Springboard programme](https://www.arts1.co.uk/the-springboard-programme/): We have found that for some new students, entering the senior school (11+) can be tricky as they haven't always had the access to expertise and training from a young age and can sometimes find it difficult to integrate into classes with more experienced students of a similar age. We are dedicated to providing access to students at all ages but not to the detriment of our advanced students. - [Top 5 plays on the West-End right now!](https://www.arts1.co.uk/top-5-plays-on-the-west-end-right-now/): Based on the highly acclaimed, much-loved novel by Michael Morpurgo, War Horse has also been developed into a hugely successful movie. To truly appreciate the magic of the story, this is one that has to be witnessed on stage. The plot centres on the touching relationship between Albert and his half-thoroughbred horse Joey. To ease themselves out of poverty, Albert’s father sells Joey to the cavalry at the onset of war in 1914. The heart-warming tale begins to unfold as Albert attempts to reunite with Joey whilst he endures all manner of wartime atrocities and experiences.
